160m 80 60 10m WSPR Challenge and CQ160

CQ160  2016

----

------

first time with almost zero DX that I can remember

changed today Beverage East in hope to catch JA
Beverage is okay but can't make something out of nothing
only  JH4UYB was yesterday good copy  none else JA

again today wspr.net.org  is unreachable most of time

Now we have a competition, the WSPR chalence list  by PE1ITR and PA3FYM
2 lists per band:
1 Rated by the number of unique decodes   shows how many wspr users are active / band
2 Rated by the sum of distances of the unique decodes

nice that  at least something useful is done with all the WSPR data

like here
http://wspr.pe1itr.com/score.php?band=3&peildatum=2016-01-29

I like the idea of competition.
For me WSPR always was  a competition to see how I was doing against  other hams in the same propagation area
I learned about propagation   I have a good location I should not complain
Easy to see how much difference in propagation is within the EU.
f.i. 28MHz VK seems never to be closed in JO50 .. DL6NL with 500mW  is decoded in VK
while others like here have zero propagation !

It is a receiving challenge that makes this special.  Only the received dx counts
SWL's  do count for 100% in this competition.
Someone has to Tx  of course but you will only help the other competitors with your TX...

I have some worries that the WSPR community can slide down
toward the excesses found with the "regular" real DX-ers  and DX-peditions
abusing the bands with illegal power and behavior.

WSPR still is  heaven for DX.
One  of the last resources where HAMS have ham spirit and people are real interested in radio propagation.
Even if  P5/xxx would be on in WSPR  there would be no chaos
I hope this will not change bij this challenge list...

I did set up 2 Beverages for 160/80  but my best rating  has been the 60m challenge

With the ZS decodes I end up in the top of the list  regularly  not expected.
We can not reach VK or  USA  since we have no permission to TX  in the WSPR window like the
UK stations can.  Why do  UK hams have that much more privileges ?
Great Britain still rules the waves.

My receiving  is staying behind   must be something wrong with Beverage
but weather is too nasty

VK2KRR FY5KE did not count in my challenge score for unknown reason

every evening ZS is decoded ZS4AFV as best DX possible here
no permit to TX in the WSPR window so no VK W possible

started late  already midnight
after first night:
just a few heard worked W VE   VY1ZM not as strong as usual.

best heard  N0TT  MO ,good copy but not listening for EU
heard C6AGU
zone 18 best DX to east

after 2nd night
heard PJ2T
JH4UYB only Japan signal was good copied and in the log i hope. Many callers and QSB made it difficult.
The Beverage did not help for Japan it needs to be N-E more.
270 Q  mostly zone 14 15 16 20
only W3BGN  and VA2WA  as TA QSO aded even poorer then the firsts night..
the band "closed" no more replies after  02Z  427 Q
early stop I did not want to stay up all night for just 10 QSO more

2011-01-22 DIAMOND 2m 70cm 1m30 Colinear inside

Having relative poor signals on the local 70cm / 2m channels using this X50 Diamond collinear 70/2  1m antenna at a height of 25m. I needed to investigate what could be wrong. Measuring the cable only 3W is left for the antenna of the 10W 435MHz output from a IC451E The cable is 30m type H100 Z50 10mm outside diameter it is semi air-spaced but has an impossible 4mm² solid CU inner conductor not much air left. I preferred the H43 Z75 cable having lower loss and mechanical better ratio in conductor size. My antenna uses SO239 connector UHF type semi air spaced isolator.  3W should be enough for a comfortable noise free FM signal. But only 27km away at PA0A the signal is weak too weak something must be wrong? I made a simple reference dipole of 2x17cm CU wire. With this dipole the signals where totally worse. So the Diamond does work? I got curious to look inside. Maybe moisture penetration degraded the antenna. This  antenna is rainwater close in its n...

SPF5189z Low noise preamp 23cm

14-4-2018 updated Above the low noise  preamp 50 - 4GHz    ebay  6€ Tested  2 small porto antennas 1 Baofeng UV antenna left   2nd best signal on PI2NOS 2 eBay DIAMONDSRH805S  wide band 144/432/1200  it works for its size as expected 3 piece of wire :   best signal in the setup... Unit under test at workbench. It was stable  50mA  at 5V   few days,  but sudden the current went up to 100mA And i could  no longer adjust it with the negative bias Voltage. The - Voltage went to zero and the SPF input port became low Z. This SPF5189z was broken  no oscillations, no input overload just it broke while i was receiving the PI2NOS 430.125 using a small antenna at the workbench. The specs of  SPF5189z  say it has an internal circuit  regulating the bias current. Replaced . again   with an other of the 5 spare SPF i have. The new one again could be adjuste...
