We had few days with total radio blackout only earth path decodes on 10m
But now 10m recovered a bit with VK2KRR decodes
weather turned back to early spring gray sky cold
some spotty ES 5Z0L was worked today in JO33 but not by me ..
I was not at the radio at the best time when reported iby 4X1RF I had WSPR running
Later in evening good ES at 70MHz several CT EA7 strong EA8 and ZB2 was reported but not heard at 4M
At 50Mhz strong EA IT9 LZ D4C/B at 50.034 heard 4X4SIX/B 50080
then 50.104 heard 5Z0L cqcq strong up 1 easy worked.. but never heard such strong East Africa
a slim? 5Z0L home frequency is 50.102 up 1
Ironic to work a slim I can't work real dx it seems.
5Z0L_6.mp3 slim easy to work!
Changed the HF/4ele 6m to HF + 5 ele 6m
2 new directors 12 and 10mm tapered elements
from left over 4/6 yagi experiments
I did not solder the 10/12mm Aluminium but instead forced the pieces 2-3cm in each other to make a good joint. Applying some WD40 first and heating the joint while hammering.
But that worked better using copper-grease the WD40 triggered the smoke alert.
Without grease it is very hard to press the tubes in each other 10mm at-most but greasing and heating it 3cm is possible that's is enough for a good electrical contact and a strong joint.
Soldering can weaken the alloy Aluminium ST50 to much
So this way its easy to construct tapered elements.
Used DK7ZB 5el 6m dimensions as starting point.
Did modify the 6m reflector to radiator distance to 142cm the HF dipole is at 120cm from the 6m Reflector element and i wanted to place the 6m radiator in front of the HF radiator thinking that it could be not so good for the shorter element behind the HF dipole but have to test that too.
After converting to 5 ele matching was unchanged very good almost 1:1.1
f/b is real good at least 3 S units als as before.
The gain most important and difficult to determinate I hope with the 3 new directors will be improved. With the 4 ele the 2 directors where to short 265 and 261cm
now d1=270 d2=269 d3=264
I was questioning the gain I could not decode W7GJ EME signal in 2 nights
Only once last year 1 decode seen.
Few years before with the 7 ele DK7ZB I had -13dB copy
Also with the 7ele LFA and the 9ele from the pre computer age had made a 2-way with Lance
Now hoping for some improvement at 6m
The best way to find out about the "gain" or effectiveness is to try to decode W7GJ EME signal
But also the WSPR reports of known terrestrial 6m signals give some indication
some wspr DX this morning
and just when writing this LA5TFA JP99 decoded at 6! but ant to S-E...
